Ben Corday:
An Artist, Not a Self-Styled Professor
Rich Hardy and Carmen Forquer Nyssen (her life’s work on the subject) are pleased to announce their upcoming book, Ben Corday: An Artist, Not a Self-Styled Professor, chronicling the life and career of one of tattooing’s great talents.
Coming Soon!
Though a British subject and a world traveler, “Big” Ben Corday (1875-1938) made his hugest impact on American tattooing. Through his exceptional artistry and creative designs, he imbued new life into the trade and redefined the standard. The admiration fellow tattooers held for his work is evidenced by the borrowed stylizations and designs seen in tattoos and tattoo flash in both his era and decades afterward—influences that endure to this day. The book will commemorate the legacy Corday left behind, revealing previously unknown details of his career illuminated by relevant images and exciting historical context.
Ben Corday Grave marker, uncovered & visited by Carmen Forquer Nyssen & her husband on a 2010 road trip through California to document long lost tattoo artists burial sites and/or identities. At the time, Corday’s grave had not been visited since his death. Many cemeteries/grave sites were mapped out & it was painstaking work (later documented on Find-A-Grave).
